Women's Soccer To Play in Inaugural College Coaches Classic
Jan. 19, 2001 MISSION, KAN. - A new event will debut on the soccer landscape with the creation of the College Coaches Classic, a doubleheader which will feature the two reigning NCAA Division I national champions, the University of North Carolina and the University of Connecticut. The event, which will be administered by the NSCAA, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, N.Y. The women's game will pit North Carolina against the University of Connecticut, while the men's game will see Connecticut square off against Penn State University. The event will be played one week before the start of the regular season for intercollegiate play. It already has received approval from the NCAA, which has granted it "exempt event" status, meaning that while the outcome will count in the teams' records, participation will not be counted against the maximum number of games that can be scheduled in a season. The College Coaches Classic will be the culmination of activities surrounding the Hall of Fame Weekend at the National Soccer Hall of Fame for three organizations: NSCAA, the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NISOA) and the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO). Other activities will include referee clinics, youth soccer games, a golf tournament, a Saturday evening dinner and a Sunday morning reception at the NSHOF museum. Based in Mission, Kan., the NSCAA is the largest single-sport coaching organization in the United States with more than 14,600 members. Founded in 1941, the NSCAA provides educational clinics, academies and seminars. It publishes the Soccer Journal (a bimonthly national soccer education journal) and offers diploma courses in all 50 states. Dedicated to promoting the game of soccer and to the education of coaches, the NSCAA hosts an annual convention attended by more than 3,000 coaches from the USA and several foreign countries.
Service to NSCAA members includes various NSCAA/adidas All-America teams, the
NSCAA/adidas Coach of the Year program, the boys and girls NSCAA/adidas High
School Rankings program and NSCAA/adidas College Rankings. More information
