Freshman forward Alyssa Rich scored goals in both women's soccer wins over Duke and Wake Forest, including the game-winner in overtime against the Blue Devils, to earn Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week honors for September 21-27, 2009.

With the Tar Heels missing four starters because of injuries and National Team commitments, Rich earned her first career start and delivered the game-winning goal at the 96:59 mark as the Tar Heels defeated Duke, 2-1. It was Rich's second goal of the season as well as her second game-winning tally. Against Wake Forest she added another goal, her third of the year, as the Tar Heels beat the seventh-ranked Demon Deacons 4-0.
