KANSAS CITY, KAN. -
Four Atlantic Coast Conference women's soccer players - including Tobin Heath and Whitney Engen from back-to-back national champion North Carolina - have been named 2009 first-team All-America by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
North Carolina, which disposed of unbeaten and top-ranked Stanford in the 2009 NCAA Women's College Cup Final at College Station, Texas December 6 by a 1-0 margin, saw senior defender Whitney Engen and senior midfielder Tobin Heath named to the squad. They were joined by two selections from ACC regular-season co-champion Florida State in sophomore forward Tiffany McCarty and senior defender Becky Edwards.
All four first-team All-America selections from the ACC were MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalists as are two second-team members - Boston College senior defender Kelly Henderson and Virginia junior midfielder Sinead Farrelly. Heath was named one of three finalists for the Hermann Trophy last week.
Two other student-athletes from ACC regular-season co-champion Boston College were named to the second team - sophomore goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni and freshman forward Victoria DiMartino. Wake Forest senior forward Kaley Fountain was named to the third team, giving the ACC nine student-athletes among the 37-member squad.
The NSCAA All-America selections will be recognized at the annual All-America Luncheon, held in Philadelphia, Pa., on January 16 as part of the 2010 NSCAA Convention.
