May 22, 2008

TULSA, Okla. --- North Carolina sophomores Sanaz Marand and Katrina Tsang each won an opening round match in the NCAA Singles Championship Wednesday at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Tar Heel standouts now advance to Thursday's round of 32. Marand will also pair with junior Sophie Grabinski in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship.

Marand, seeded No. 9-16 in the singles event, easily dispatched Tennessee's Caitlin Whoriskey, 6-2, 6-1, to advance. Tsang also took care of her opponent in straight sets, defeating Cal's Cristina Visico, 7-5, 6-3.

In the second round, Marand will face No. 34 Katrina Zheltova of Sacramento State. Tsang is matched up with No. 30 Tracy Lin of UCLA. Marand's match is set to begin at 10 a.m. CDT, while Tsang will start at noon.

Marand and Grabinski will take on second-seeded Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe of Fresno State at 2 p.m.
